Getting all you need to get started can be a bit pricey so here are some ideas for getting some thrifty start up supplies

Let me say again Yahoo Freecycle Groups! http://groups.yahoo.com/ Sewing groups and Freecycle groups!

Yard Sales, Thrift stores, Dollar Stores and Shop the sales. Craigslist, also folks

Look for old patterns in yard sales and thrift shops. Must thrift stores just throw them out and will give them to you for free. Look online for free patterns and join sewing groups!!!!

I scored a $25 ruler at Hancock's 80% off in the sales rack! You name it and it was in there.

Recycle old clothes.. old t shirts, jeans, dresses, can be made into bags, quilts, pot holders, patches, new shirts, dresses and the list goes on. I have patterns and ideas for all this!

Sundays Best a fabric store locally, SCORE!! they had a sale on fabric and it was just 2 DOLLARS a yard BINGO!

Coupons you can join Hancock's, Joann's, and Sunday best, Sew much Fun and they all send out coupons, or Email you newsletters with sales and coupons so you can shop till you drop.

Save buttons, zippers, off stuff too damaged to use, belts can make straps for bags, Be creative and Inventive.

Sheets can be used for dresses and test fabric.......your muslin on the cheap.

Finger press use an old wooden

Stileto wooden BBQ skewer... big package 50 for 1.00 at the dollar store.

Cording for piping old phone wire, dollar store cording look in the tool section, twine ...its almost like a scavenger hunt.

Thread clips, finger nail clippers, tweezers in kits, computer tools, computer vaccuums, lets not forget tooth brushes and old paint brushes to wipe and clean. Q-tips, fishing tweezers they are long and thin. Use only sewing machine oil to oil your machine.

Big huge heavy washers can be wrapped and used as pattern weights.

Medical paper is cheaper than pattern paper, butcher paper, wax paper, tissue for presents , all this can be used to trace patterns. News paper can stain fabric but a friend of mine use to use it.

Old blankets can be used for quilt stuffing.

Scraps from sewing can be used for stuffing, reuse pillow stuffing.

Reuse gift boxes for storage, pill bottles to hold old needles, Old tins to hold sewing supplies, old plastic coffee cans for storage and not to mention tackle boxes and tool boxes. Yeah you have to clean them first but how nice remake them into yours

A dresser can serve as a place to store patterns and fabric. Suit cases can be used to store fabric neatly and dust free.

Need a stiff bottom for a bag? or board for your home made folios? Use old political signs, ad signs on the road that often get left behind they are plastic and stiff.. please dont go taking the good ones you can and will get in trouble for that. Dollar store foam board huge poster size is good and you can make alot from them, cereal boxes, cardboard boxes.

Old mike crates and be lined or used as they are for storage. An old file holder can be used to store rulers. old file cabinets can be used for notions and patterns. Store patterns in old notebooks look for them in thriftshops or use your kids old ones. I love PDF files for patterns!!!!! easy to store and very small.

No matter how big or small your sewing space is we can help you find the room to sew!

ok Alabama, the woods , wet sloshy, cold, and wet ohh yeah i already said that.

oh so not much happened on christmas eve, i was still sewing a present short. Aunt Kris ohh this is nto going to end well i just know it and I went to bed in tears till christmas day.

Christmas day sisters house

C. " did you get everything"

Me" yeah"

C: " Well what did you get. ..her."

Me. "Something so unique nobody will ever have one like it"

C: "what? what? what is it! I thought you were going to get her candy again this year and soap"

M: "i did get her some candy and something else"

C: stomping her foot "what?????"

M: "dont do that it causes wrinkles" I stick my tongue out

As a spoon swings toward my head my Aunt comes in.

Nearing 70 retired military if she was still serving our troups would be home cause she would have scared our enemies into submission much like the cat slinking off into a corner. Darn no place to hide.

ME: "Hi aunt Kris Merry Christmas."

Kris: I have been sitting outside for 30 minutes I could have died before anyone found me"

C: "we are sorry we did not hear u come up"

We always eat before presents..and family filed in now there is not enough seats at the dining room table so to the kids table i went and Aunt Kris watches football on the couch while she eats, we dont do that even try it though we are older, without her permission, we would never assume to eat on a couch in front of her.

So exiled at the kids table because i tripped over the 2 year old nephew I am sitting with my niece whispering like my aunt can hear us from 2 rooms away.

N: Did you all your shopping done?

Me: no i still have some stuff to sew for the Cuban Mafia and i finally came up with something for aunt Kris this morning"

N: choking on her mouthfull of food staring at me in horror as spoon launched mash potatos fly by

ME: Dont look at me like that.

N: but but

Me: "dont .....she will like it i know it"

Christmas paper everywhere, Kids hollering, my Aunt opens her gifts. I mean this is the person who has everything but likes nothing and whats nothing.

She opens the Cell phone case from C:, New cookbook from Brother, Socks, house slippers, t shirts, and assorted candy.

Then she gets to my gifts

she opens the gift card to winn dixie and the chocolate covers pretzels then the gift

she opens it slowly

my mother in law gasps and throws me a glare, fubar i am sooooo dead when i get home.

Aunt" Ohh this is lovely what is it?"

me: "Aunt Kris its a Table topper for Tea"

Aunt: "really its so nice it reminds of the time i was in europe"

me: "It matchees your Tea Set."

Aunt " Yes it does I love it"

I smile with glee as evil glares fling at me from across the room.

Now where did this lovely table topper came from? It was from aPrez challenge from my quilting guild which my Mother in law started but did not finished so i finished it off. Wrapped it up and gave it to Aunt Kris. I was staring around my house trying to come up with anything and i mean anything and then i spotted it, the colors work and nobody will ever think to give her anthing remotely like it. Done it was soo wrapped.

Now my mother in law loves me, she is my best friend and i am sure i still have a yard of the miller fabric somewhere she has been wanting. Now if i top that with cheese cake she bound to forgive me. Right? OMG I hope she gets over it I mean she scares me and she can turn my puppies against me. Cheese cake and some exotic flavor of coffee yeah bribery works.

My MIL who i love to pieces is gearing up for Christmas, I plan on making at least 50% of Our Gifts, So i am going to be busy busy busy. We have divided up the chores, cost, and ideas. and off we go. So far I ahve cut out 2 patterns, and fabric for 4 bags. I still have to tackle the shed. and work on my quilting challenge for my guild.

I am learning to sew, which means i have many good intentions and just not enough actual experience. So with that being said I start off with the doggy jacket.

Now i am not saying i never made anything, I made several blankets, skirts, dresses, purses aprons, curtains, pajama pants etc.... My brother and husband hate everything i have made for them. The dress for a dance and graduation they were loved.

Now i get to the jacket for the fur babies. Max my min pin hates clothes. So getting my daughter to wrangle him up and hold while i measure was a trick beyond measure. I think we have won wars easier than that.

I begin to plot, and here at this point my lovely daughter the voice of treason begins.

ME: Ohh this will look so Good on Max.
EC: Mom Max hate sweaters.
Me: If he gets cold enough he will wear them.
Hubby: Lets make him booties!
EC: Mom ya know he did eat your Micky mouse hat.

With that being said i have put sweaters on my dog before he looked at me like i was killing him. Then he went outside and rolled in the mud in said sweater. I have not put one on him since. Now my EC said maybe it was the color..........

I have to wonder why do i sew?

Hello Everyone,

I have been suffering from the Flu this month and finally my cough sounds slightly better and I no longer sound like Mr. Ed. Everyone in my home has been suffering from strip throat to the flu since Christmas falling one by one like dominoes the the creeping cruds.

As I sat at home pouting because I planned a vacation around the last Gala meeting and also planned to go to Sunday Best Quilts and visit the new store to buy more fabric for my fabric stash then I could not go the cruds got me.

So sipping on Nyquil and Tea I came up with a list of things

I want to accomplish by each Gala monthly meeting; using that as my cutoffpoints. My MIL read my list and spewed her coffee and my daughterf ell over laughing. Don't even ask about the dogs.

So without further delay I will give you my quilting resolutions for 2009!

1.Pay Gala Dues…….Missed 2 meeting in a row …... pouting bad….

2.Finish the 2 lovely baby blankets for my brother and Niece. I got the kits from Joann's and they have been sitting in my shed ever since. Ok it's been cold and I have not been outside.

3. Start on my Sewing list or at least make headway...yes i plan on doing the projects in the list and these.

4. Scoodies cause its darn cold here.

5.A floor quilt. I heard of this so this will be my one big projectfor the year.

6.I received over the holidays a gift of 2 baby quilt tops from a friend. They are made from her clothes when her and her sisters were little. I want finish them up and bind them.

7.I received another orphan quilt top and quilt pieces. I want to finish it and recycle the rest.

8.I want to make a quilted tea cozy... 10 of them, quilted bowls and/or boxes and quilted tea wallets.

9.A jelly roll quilt top……just the top

10.An Asian inspired quilt to cover my table for Tea parties.

11.A Latin inspired table topper Quilt for my dining room with placemats, heat pads, casserole cover and pot holders.

12. 2 donation baby quilts…ok maybe just the tops………..

13. Learn one new quilting/sewing technique every month.

14. Use at least ¼ of my stash by the end of the year BEFORE making anymore MAJOR purchases or at least use ½ of what I buy within 3 months.

My MIL took my tea making sure I did not slip in any liquor in there and as I sat making my list. Did anyone else make any sewing/quilting resolutions this year??

Hope to see everyone in February. I have doubled up on myVitamin C and drinking Green Tea.
